About me

My name is Manel van Nieuwland, and I’m a freelance journalist specializing in India. Ever since I was ten years old, I knew I wanted to become a journalist. A few years later, I read a book about India that fascinated me. When I turned eighteen, I finally had the chance to visit India for the first time — in 2010 — and I’ve been returning ever since.

I decided to study Indian Languages and Cultures for one year at the University of Ghent. During this time, I learned some Hindi and Sanskrit. Then I decided to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Journalism in Utrecht, which I completed in 2020.

I am primarily interested in human-interest stories and topics such as emancipation, human rights, sustainability, and health. I aim to tell the stories of people from around the world, as I believe this can help foster greater understanding and tolerance across borders.
